101 Masterworks: Science and Art in the Museums and Libraries of Madrid gathers a collection of pieces with different chronologies, techniques, materials and purposes. Also varied are their locations: from Alcalá de Henares to San Lorenzo del Escorial, as well as Atocha, el Prado, Recoletos, the Complutense University campus, and an endless number of spaces within the city and the Community of Madrid.

Durante su juventud en Gotinga, Humboldt realizó algunas excursiones con jóvenes estudiantes y científicos por los alrededores. Particularmente importante fue la amistad que trabó con Georg Forster que le guió en un breve viaje por los Países Bajos, Inglaterra y Francia; una vivencia que sembró para siempre en Humboldt las semillas de su pasión por la exploración. Su estancia en Londres fue muy provechosa, fiel al espíritu que también le acompañaría en sus viajes posteriores, visitó todo lo visitable; minas, cuevas, el jardín botánico de Kew... además de relacionarse con varias personalidades y tener un encuentro con las pinturas de la Royal Academy of Arts. Este texto intruduce, por vez primera en español, el diario de este viaje cuyo hallazgo es relativamente reciente. Traducción basada en la edición alemana publicada en 2008 por Kölbel, Bernd, Martin Sauerwein, Katrin Sauerwein, Steffen Kölbel & Cathleen Buckow.

Elisa Garrido, quien ha realizado estudios de Historia del Arte y Comunicación Audiovisual en España, presenta en la sección de Sintaxis un acercamiento al concepto de "musealización" y con ello señala la importancia de los museos en nuestros días. A partir de la modelización de un recinto dedicado a las musas que protegían las bellas artes, la necesidad latente por resguardar el pasado para entender el presente va más allá de la mera exposición y clasificación museográfica, pues se trata de un lugar que no sólo está relacionado con la historia y el saber, sino también con un proyecto educativo. Sobre la necesidad de establecer vínculos más cercanos entre museos y escuelas. Elisa Garrido puntualiza la labor pedagógica a través del patrimonio; éstas y otras preocupaciones son las que la ensayista entrega en el texto "Del Cabinet de Curiosités al Museo Contemporáneo".

This paper is focused on the links between Humboldt the Romantic Orient, which supposed a strong reference for him and his feeling of the tropical exotic. These experiences will be present in the publication of his work Vues des Cordillères et monumens des peuples indigènes de l'Amérique (1810), an illustrated comparison between the American and Asian culture addressed to the understanding of the European public.

The picturesque can be explained as a feeling that invites the viewer of a particular scene to reproduce it in a frame, which allowed the travellers to move images as possessions, especially through the publication of the Picturesque Atlases. Each of these images is a testimony of interlinked travelogues and this is the case of the Plate III, "Vue de la Grande Place de Mexico" in Vues des Cordillères et Monuments des Peuples Indigènes de l’Amérique (Humboldt's Picturesque Atlas); an image illustrating the exchange networks that were happening between artists and scientists through the travels and expeditions.

The picturesque can be defined as a feeling that invite the viewer of a particular scene to reproduce it in a table, and that was what allowed the images to be transported as possessions to Europe in the Nineteenth-Century. This article exposes the assumption of the picturesque representation as a form of appropriation of the New World through the art of painters who were employed by the scientific explorers. Although the German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt expressed his desire to represent scenes of true and real nature, the plates of his Atlas Pittoresque. Vues des Cordillères et Monumens des Peuples Indigènes de l’Amérique were embellished by the language of art.
